Leading with Better Questions

Our Aim

The aim of the In2:InThinking Network is to promote study, insight, and application of individual and collective awareness of systems, psychology, variation, knowledge, and their interactions - elements recognized as the basis of W. Edwards Deming's “System of Profound KnowledgeTM (S0PK).

The concept of “InThinking” derives from “awareness of our own thinking and the assumptions" we make in how we act when we allocate resources (time, money, space, materials, inventory, equipment, ideas, etc.) where thinking is defined as “a way of reasoning.” Fundamental to resource allocation is whether our activities are deliberately (by choice) proactive or reactive, and whether the resources involved belong to the enterprise ("ours") or to one's own department, function, district, part, etc. ("mine"). InThinking invites an individual to learn to perceive the patterns of interdependencies surrounding him or her and to reason and judge with new insight and thereby engage in the activities of Purposeful Resource Management and Purposeful Resource Leadership across their enterprise. Such efforts would be commonplace in a "Business as Unusual" environment.

Background of the 2025 Forum Artwork - By Lori Sortino

The way a horse moves is efficient and effective.  They are prey animals, and have evolved to be efficient with quickness and speed.  Not only that, they are effective at working together as a herd.  For example, when the herd rests or eats, there is a always a sentry watching for danger.  They exhibit leadership based on the horse that's naturally good at a task; alerting to danger, finding water, fighting off threats, exploring non-threatening guests with curiosity, and so forth.  As we explore the themes of efficiency and effectiveness, borrow lenses from the systems in the natural world.  Horses are just one of the mirrors we can hold up to our own efforts to be efficient and effective, as an individual, and as an organization.

The stallion in this image is "Plato," a cross bred 3/4 Friesian 1/4 Quarter Horse.  The breeder, Greg Davis, is cross breeding several breeds with intentionality for speed, agility, athleticism, size, and beauty.  Choosing an image of one of the horses from this "Making Pegasus" project aptly represents "Rethinking Efficiency & Exploring Effectiveness" because it's at the core of Greg's mission and philosophy.
