Good morning from the west coast home of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, located in Canoga Park, California, on the western end of the San Fernando Valley in greater Los Angeles.

With the health care debate gaining more and more presidential air time in the U.S., Michael Pollan, professor of journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, has recently contibuted an Op-Ed piece to the New York Times on the topic of "Big Food vs. Big Insurance."  In it, he suggests that the health care debate be expanded to include a focus on the American way of eating."  Such systemic thinking is near and dear to many of us as we
come together for a few hours of "thinking together;" time that will be well invested.  This month we feature Dave Flanigan and Tracy Huston as our Thought Leaders on Friday, September 25th and Monday, September 28th. Details follows below.

Thought Leaders - Dave Flanigan and Tracy Huston

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Enterprise Thinking Network welcomes Dave Flanigan (upper right) and Tracy Huston (lower left), co-founders of Menlo Lab, to lead our ninth Ongoing Discussion of 2009 on September 25th and 28th (and our 117th session since we began in 2000).  They have selected has selected "Pathways to Change" as our topic this month.

Tracy Huston and Dave Flanigan

Please join your fellow "OD participants" for a vigorous and provocative conversation with the founders of the Menlo Lab, Tracy Huston and Dave Flanigan. This month the Ongoing Discussion will take place on a Friday and a Monday, September 25th and 28th. Please make a note of this slightly different schedule. Their Thought Piece can be found at this link.

Tracy and Dave are old friends of PWR's Enterprise Thinking Network as well as the In2:InThinking Network.  Tracy hosted an Ongoing Discussion in September 2007 on the topic of Whole System Social Innovation, a favorite topic of hers.  She has also presented at the In2:InThinking Network's 2007 Forum and appeared with Dave at the 2009 Forum.

Menlo Lab is a global network of leaders from both the public and private sectors dedicated to the cultivation of economic, ecological, and social well-being-in our institutions, and our communities. As a self-organizing network, participants work with leaders from business, education, social services agencies, government, and civic groups to develop their individual and collective capacities to create the futures they want.

Menlo Lab was formed in January 2007 out of the shared intention to co-create the social innovations needed to address persisting challenges in complex systems. Participants in the Menlo network began to see a set of change principles that applied equally to all projects, and adopted them as a framework to guide them in their approaches to change. The principles -  Whole System, Inside-Out, Real Work, Sustainability - are described in the Thought Piece.

At the end of their Thought Piece, Tracy and David offer a selection of provocative questions to help us think about how we create our future, and the role of leaders in this work. Please reflect on these questions after you read the Thought Piece and before you join the call on Friday or Monday. Here's two to get you started:

When you are most successful in addressing your work challenges, what is it in you that allows you to prevail?

What is required to surface individual and collective wisdom to meet a challenge?

Tracy brings over 20 years experience in supporting global corporations, educators, non-profits, and community leaders in affecting whole system change. She works with top management at Nissan in strategy and leadership development, and co-leads the Menlo Lab work locally and globally. She is the author of numerous articles on the personal, relational, and structural dimensions of change, and wrote the book Inside-Out: Stories and Methods for Generating the Collective Will to Create the Future We Want.

David has 33 years of global business experience in the automotive and financial service sectors.  Dave was President of Ford Credit International where he led 9,500 employees and developed highly profitable financial services businesses in 38 countries.  After retiring from Ford, he now employs his leadership and business transformation experience to coach other leaders in building high-performing teams and creating whole-system, cross-sector change.  He is Chairman of the Detroit Institute for Children, serves as Trustee of the Society for Organizational Learning, and actively supports projects throughout the global Menlo network.

Contact Dave and Tracy by email at dcf@pentel.net and tracyhuston@cc.rr.com, respectively, with any questions you would like to share with them in preparation for their OD session with us.

International Participants

Our conference call sessions are toll-free within the U.S. and Canada.  Several international participants have been able to connect toll-free using Skype for a VOIP connection, which we now recommend to others calling in from outside the U.S. and Canada.

First, you'll need to establish a Skype account at www.skype.com.  Once Skype is set up and functioning correctly the only thing that is different when connecting with our "Thinking Roadmap" conference call sessions ("OD" or "The New Economics Study Sessions") is the use of a pass code and security code.  For our "OD" sessions, these numbers are provided once the "participant survey" is completed.  For the "The New Economics Study Sessions," these numbers are provided in an email from Tim Higgins, who hosts these calls.  In either case, when prompted by Skype to enter these codes, use the keyboard not voice option and be sure to turn off the computer's microphone, otherwise the numeric keys don't function.  If the microphone is left on when the codes are entered, Skype's automated operator will reply with "number not recognized," as no number has been transmitted.

New users of Skype are encouraged to perform a conference call test in advance of the scheduled "Thinking Roadmap" conference call.  Contact Bill Bellows to arrange for a test call.

Thought Leader Update
News from our Thought Leaders, both past and future...

David Langford
Our October 2009 Thought Leader will be appearing as a keynote speaker at the annual W. Edwards Deming Conference, set for October 11-13 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.   David will speak on the topic "Develop Joy in Learning and Leading."  He will be joined in a keynote role by Mike Tveite and Andrew McKeon.  Mike will present "A Personal Journey of Discovery about Dr. Deming's Teachings".  He assisted Dr. Deming with numerous four-day conferences and accompanied him on consulting visits.  Andrew, who works with companies to make sustainability an organizing principle of their operations, will look at the effect of climate change and sustainability on business systems using the prism of Deming's System of Profound Knowledge.

Lew Rhodes
Since his appearance with us, our October 2008 Thought Leader has been busy designing his website (www.sabusense.com) and adding content on a regular basis.   If you are "Having trouble making sense of schools?...trying to connect-the-dots...get-out-of-the-box to find a different Big Picture?,"  Find out if this site can help you THINK DIFFERENTLY about what you SEE PEOPLE DOING every day in schools.
He invites our readers to visit his site, but also offers a warning, "THIS SITE MIGHT MAKE YOUR HEAD HURT."

Clare Crawford-Mason
Our June 2006 Thought Leader has been referenced in an interesting article in the Huffington Post about her How Hospitals Heal Themselves documentary, with reference to Dr. Deming as well.  Clare extends an invitation to read the article, comment on it, and "send it on to your people and state and national representatives and whomever might like a new and possible perspective on the healthcare debate."  She also reminds us that Dr. Deming said, "Survival is optional.  No one has to change."
