Aim and Stats
Now in our tenth year of operation, the aim of the "OD" sessions is to continue to foster an appreciation of Enterprise Thinking, as well as inthinking, within an emerging thinking network that is developing inside Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and beyond. Dates for future "OD" sessions along with additional "thinking" opportunities for 2009 can be found in this announcement.
OD Stats
For an update on OD statistics, this month's invitation is going out to 5000+ partners in the U.S., as well as fellow inthinking partners in Australia, Austria, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Dubai, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the U.K. Taken together, these individuals represent over 600 organizations in this list of nations, from elementary schools and senior high schools to colleges and universities, from one-person consulting firms to United Technologies, GM, IBM, General Electric, NASA, and Philips Electronics. Good morning from the west coast home of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, located in Canoga Park, California, on the western end of the San Fernando Valley in greater Los Angeles.
With the 40th anniversary of the lunar landing of Apollo 11 upon us on July 21st, propelled from Earth by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's F-1 and J-2 engines....YES, it's time again come together for a few hours of "thinking together;" time that will be well invested. This month we feature Doug Adams and Debra Lewis as our Thought Leaders on Thursday, July 23rd and Friday, July 24th. Details follows below for dates that have shifted one day to the right.
Cheers... Bill Bellows

Fond Memories - Peter Scholtes and Sheldon Rovin
With great sadness, I share the news that Peter Scholtes (left) and Sheldon Rovin (right), our Ongoing Discussion Thought Leaders from September 2008 and February 2009 (2008, and 2007), respectively, died this past weekend. We remember both very fondly for their immense contributions to our thinking network efforts. In addition to their time with us as Thought Leaders, both dedicated themselves to sharing their thoughts through their books. Peter was the co-author of The Team Handbook and author of The Leader's Handbook. Shel was the co-author, with Russ Ackoff, of Redesigning Society and Beating the System, a topic near and dear to him and Russ.
Shel's online contributions include a series of newsletter columns for the In2:InThinking Network. With his devilish grin, he challenged us to see the world with boundary-less thinking. Shel's obituary can be found online in this link to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Peter's online contributions include a series of articles and letters on his website. With his Burl Ives voice, he challenged us to see the harmful effects of reward and incentive programs.
Both will be dearly missed and many will continue to stand on their shoulders. Follow this link to an online obituary for Peter.

Thought Leaders - Doug Adams and Debra Lewis
Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Enterprise Thinking Network welcomes Doug Adams and Debra Lewis to lead our seventh Ongoing Discussion of 2009 on July 23rd and 24th (and our 115th session since we began in 2000). They have selected "Reconstruction In Iraq: An Extraordinary Opportunity to Expand One's Thinking On How We 'Help' Others" as our topic this month.
![Doug Adams and Debra Lewis](http://www.in2in.org/images/nimages/DebraLewis&DougAdamsc.jpg)
Those of us who attended the In2:InThinking Forum in April 2009 may recall Deb Lewis and her husband Doug Adams offering very moving descriptions of their Forum experience. We are very pleased that they have stayed connected to our efforts, despite the demands of command (for Deb anyway; Doug is retired and very active), and pleased to invite you to join us in conversation about her recent experience in Iraq. During an extremely turbulent and dangerous time in Iraq, COL Deb Lewis was assigned to the US Army Corps of Engineers ( USACE), Gulf Region Division where she commanded Central District (GRC), and was responsible for reconstruction missions within Baghdad and Al Anbar Provinces. Reconstruction projects included schools, health clinics and hospitals, water treatment plants and electrical substations, courthouses and judicial facilities, police and fire stations, and barracks. As a member of Deb's team, Doug will share his home front perspectives as well.
The Thought Piece for this Ongoing Discussion is actually a collection of a variety of documents and media compiled by Deb's administrative staff and troops. Among the many stories, reports and books written about that period of time, perhaps the following three key records capture her experiences best. First, the monthly written updates prepared by GRC's Public Affairs Officer, Norris Jones, a retired Navy Captain. Second, the short 2-3 minute videos (see links in the Thought Piece), prepared by GRC's Broadcast Journalist, Troy Rolan, a retired Army Sergeant First Class. Third, many Postcards from Iraq were prepared by individual deployees, are also referenced in the Thought Piece. Construction is Hard Anywhere... and especially in Iraq. Challenging to do on time, on budget and to quality standards in a contingency status. Project management in 120F heat. What were some of the challenges? Funding delays, communication/language challenges, user requested changes, religious holidays, permit delays, coalition rules affecting workers/quality inspections/ material delivery/security of site, immature Iraqi construction industry, contractor inefficiency, civil unrest and sectarian violence, workers threatened/ beaten/ kidnapped/killed, weather, insufficient time allowed in contract, data errors, increasing Iraqi coordination requirements as the Iraqi government stood up (good reason!), material was hijacked and drivers were killed or kidnapped. As you read the Thought Piece, here are questions to consider as you ponder others; · What are some questions we might ask about these challenges from the perspective of InThinking, Investment Thinking, Parallel or Lateral Thinking, and Systems Thinking, and Enterprise Thinking? · What are we curious about regarding the nature of leadership in this situation? · What would you like to know about Deb Lewis's vision for the missions she commanded, and how she communicated her vision to others? · What are some questions we might ask about the nature of "help" under such conditions? · What can we say about mental models and assumptions that we bring from our culture into another culture, in the context of trying to help? · What questions can we ask about the nature of learning in this system? It what ways was rapid and shared learning critical to the mission? Learn more about Doug and Deb in the Thought Piece. Contact them by email (DougSAdams@aol.com and
lewisadams@comcast.net, respectively) with any questions you would like to share with them in preparation for their OD session with us.
Anyone interested in meeting Deb can attend her lunchtime lecture at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne on July 22nd. See details below under the "Thinking Roadmap Seminars and Workshops" banner. |

International Participants
Our conference call sessions are toll-free within the U.S. and Canada. Several international participants have been able to connect toll-free using Skype for a VOIP connection, which we now recommend to others calling in from outside the U.S. and Canada. First, you'll need to establish a Skype account at www.skype.com. Once Skype is set up and functioning correctly the only thing that is different when connecting with our "Thinking Roadmap" conference call sessions ("OD" or "The New Economics Study Sessions") is the use of a pass code and security code. For our "OD" sessions, these numbers are provided once the "participant survey" is completed. For the "The New Economics Study Sessions," these numbers are provided in an email from Tim Higgins, who hosts these calls. In either case, when prompted by Skype to enter these codes, use the keyboard not voice option and be sure to turn off the computer's microphone, otherwise the numeric keys don't function. If the microphone is left on when the codes are entered, Skype's automated operator will reply with "number not recognized," as no number has been transmitted.
New users of Skype are encouraged to perform a conference call test in advance of the scheduled "Thinking Roadmap" conference call. Contact Bill Bellows to arrange for a test call. |
