Aim and Stats
Aim
Now in our eighth year of
operation, the aim of the "OD" sessions is to
continue to foster an appreciation of Enterprise
Thinking, as well as inthinking,
within an emerging thinking network that is
developing inside Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and
beyond. Dates for future "OD" sessions along
with additional "thinking" opportunities for 2007
can be found in this announcement.
OD Stats
For an update on OD statistics, this
month's invitation is going out to 3582
partners in the U.S., as well as fellow
inthinking partners in Australia, Austria,
Bosnia-Hercegovina, Brazil, Canada, China,
Dubai, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany,
India, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia,
Mexico, Netherlands, Romania, Russia,
Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, South
Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the
U.K.. Taken together, these individuals
represent over 600 organizations in this list
of nations, from elementary schools and
senior high schools to colleges and
universities, from one-person
consulting firms to United Technologies, GM,
IBM, General Electric, NASA, and Philips
Electronics. Among this list of invitees,
participation in last month's OD conference
call with Andrew Johnson included 20 partners
from across the US and England as well (123
have joined us so far in 3 sessions in 2007,
444 partners joined us throughout 2006, 402
thinking partners joined us throughout 2005).

April 2007 Ongoing Discussion - John Pourdehnad |
|
As we come off a successful 2007
In2:InThinking Forum, we are pleased to share
a first-time Forum speaker with those who
could not attend the Forum in Los Angeles.
John Pourdehnad, great friend of the Network,
was one of our conference speakers. This is
a good example of our intention to keep us
all connected throughout the year by means of
the annual Forum followed (and preceded -
it's a cycle) by the monthly Ongoing
Discussions. The title of John's presentation
on Saturday morning of the Forum weekend was
"The
Devil is Not in the Details."
For the April OD, John offers another paper
titled "Synthetic
(Integrative) Project Management". John
suggests that despite significant progress in
the development of computer-aided project
management tools to help plan and manage
projects, "more often than not capital
projects overrun their budgets, fall behind
schedule, and fail to meet their business
objectives." This paper examines this
apparent paradox and proposes a different
strategy for improving performance.
Specifically, John argues that this problem
stems from the nature of the "traditional
paradigm, which relies on existing knowledge
- knowledge gained from studying traditional
approaches." Please join us in a meaningful
conversation stemming from questions that
matter. There will be plenty of opportunity
to flex your new muscles, if you participated
in the Forum, and plenty of chances to
challenge your own thinking. What does your
"traditional approach" look like, and how did
you get stuck there? This month's Ongoing
Discussion promises to be a rich experience.
John is presently the Associate Director of
the Ackoff Center for Advancement of Systems
Approaches at the University of Pennsylvania.
He is also an adjunct professor of Systems
Engineering. He has for many years worked
extensively with Dr. Ackoff, and the two of
them have consulted for nearly every industry
or kind of business you can imagine. John has
written or edited several books.
