Aim and Stats

Aim

Now in our seventh year of operation, the aim of the "OD" sessions is to continue to foster an appreciation of Enterprise Thinking, as well as inthinking, within an emerging thinking network that is developing inside Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne and beyond. Dates for future "OD" sessions along with additional "thinking" opportunities for 2006 can be found in this announcement.

OD Stats

For an update on OD statistics, last month's invitation was sent to 3473 inthinking partners. With the latest updates to our mailing list, this month's invitation is going out to 3493 partners in the U.S., as well as fellow inthinking partners in Australia, Austria, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Brazil, Canada, China, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the U.K.. Taken together, these individuals represent over 470 organizations in this list of nations, from elementary schools and senior high schools to colleges and universities, from one-person consulting firms to United Technologies, GM, IBM, General Electric, NASA, and Philips Electronics. Among this list of invitees, participation in last month's OD conference call with Jane Lorand included 25 partners from across the US and England as well. Added to the 382 partners for our sessions through October, 407 partners have joined in so far this year (402 thinking partners joined us throughout 2005). Yes, the diffusion process continuuues...

In2:IN

Good morning from Canoga Park, California, home of United Technologies' Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. With the coming of the year-end holiday season, not to mention (possibly inspired by Eric Idle) Look at the Bright Side Day on December 21st, it's time to come together for a few hours of "thinking together." This month's Ongoing Discussion is scheduled for Thursday, December 14th and Friday, December 15th, from 12-2pm Pacific Time on both days.

  • December 2006 Ongoing Discussion - Ralph Wood
  • Our last Thought Leader for the year is Ralph Wood, the principal of Accelerating Excellence, LLC, a consulting and training company dedicated to improving the quality and productivity of enterprises. Ralph is retired from United Technologies Corporation, where served as the director of the corporate-wide quality and productivity operating system called Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE). While with United Technologies, Ralph was also responsible for overhauling a corporate-wide "Passport" stage-gated product development process to reduce product introduction failures, for leading the incorporation of lean thinking into ACE, for conducting gap analyses of UTC's program management practices and participating in the creation of a Program Manager Assessment Center, for creating metrics by which to measure engineering effectiveness, and for supporting the redesign of the Research Center's innovation process by developing tools and metrics for increasing the business impact of R&D. Prior to joining United Technologies, Ralph spent most of his career at GE's R&D Center, where he managed a variety of product technology and process modeling programs. He is a graduate of Brown University, where he earned three degrees in mechanical engineering, including his Ph.D.. Ralph stays connected to United Technologies in his retirement with consulting assignments. He is also employed as an adjunct faculty member for the National Graduate School, where he teaches courses in program management and financial applications.

Ralph's Thought Piece is titled "Performance Culture". A condensed list of the Talking Points he would like to review with us follows below, all taken from his experiences over the past few years in leading the efforts to transform the culture of United Technologies.

Day 1 - What Characterizes a Performance Culture?
    Notions of Purpose
    Notions of Scope
Guiding Principles for a Performance Culture
    Visible Artifacts
    Deeply-held Beliefs and Assumptions

Day 2 - Transformation to a Performance Culture Where to Start?
    Be Proactive
Begin with the End in Mind
    Put First Things First
    Think Win-Win
Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood
    Synergize
    Sharpen the Saw
