Deming's Ideas in the Twenty-first Century

Description: Participants will fly helicopters, play with puzzle pieces and puzzle on a number sequence as we take a journey through Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge. Given the theme of the conference, 3 distinct forms of learning will be distinguished and the role of creative thinking in application of the PDSA cycle will be explored. Time permitting, we will end with a discussion of some common misunderstandings of Deming’s Philosophy.

Target Audience: Managers and technologists who seek to improve their thinking about current issues of management and development and to gain the insights brought by Deming’s ideas.

Organizational Issues: Sustainability at the organizational and national levels, enabling innovation, improving organizational effectiveness, management development.

Objectives: There are three primary objectives of this seminar;
To deepen attendees’ understanding of Deming’s ideas
To bring Deming’s ideas to bear on issues facing the organization now and in the future
To enhance attendees’ tools for insight and reflection

Ian Bradbury

Biography: Ian Bradbury was born in Sheffield, England and obtained a B.Sc. in Mathematics from UEA and a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Birmingham, England before coming to the U.S. He spent 4 years teaching statistics at UT Dallas and Oakland University, Michigan, and 7 years leading GM Powertrain's engine design quality effort before joining Peaker Services, Inc. (PSI) as President in 1997. Ian acted as trustee for the first leveraged ESOP transaction in 2000 and PSI is now a 100% employee owned company. PSI's historical core for over 40 years has been service and upgrade of EMD engines and controls in locomotive, marine and power generation. Since joining PSI, Ian had led the effort to diversify the company into controls for other diesel, natural and biogas engines, steam and gas turbines.

He obtained an MBA from the University of Michigan in 2003. Ian is a member of ASQ and serves on the W. Edwards Deming Institute advisory board. He is past Chair of the ASQ Deming Medal and 3rd VP of the Locomotive Maintenance Officers’ Association.

Ian and his wife of 26 years, Kathy, are both keen mountain bikers and craft beer consumers. Kathy teaches yoga, 'enhance fitness’ and diabetes prevention as well as smoking a mean brisket. They have two sons - James (25) and George (22). James is the video producer for Motor1.com, George is studying creative writing, illustration and graphic design.
