Transformation of an Organization: Changing Structures, Systems, and Culture
Presented by Jim Chandler and Darrel Gooden

Format: Seminar
Primary Focus: Systems Thinking
Secondary Focus: Leadership

Description: Jim Chandler and Darrel Gooden will share lessons from their journey of implementing change at their respective naval engineering organizations (repesenting thousands of employees), including promoting awareness of Dr. Deming's "Profound Knowledge."  They will discuss their challenges and successes, the different approaches they took and the barriers that are built-in structural impediments.  How important it is to look at the entire organization as a system.  Organizations must create a culture with values that are followed and a vision that consists of a higher moral purpose.

Don Beck, a world-renowned expert in global transformation, as well as author of Spiral Dynamics, will lead off this seminar with an introduction (by Skype) to the topic of "Transformation of an Organzation."

Target Audience: Leaders of any organization, large or small.

Organizational Issues: To respect the need for system thinking, values and a structure to support this approach. To avoid a focus on short term results and cost savings without an appreciation of a system.  How to eliminate fear within an organization to create a learning organization.  To restore the dignity of people with intrinsic motivation and not incentives and ranking and rating of people.

Objectives:  The purpose of this presentation is to spark a life of continual learning both as individuals and organizations.  We hope to engage in a dialogue with the participants and to answer Dr. Deming’s question that he began every seminar:  What are we here for?  After a period of silence, he would say “we are here to have fun, to learn and make a difference."  This is our objective.

Jim Chandler

Biography: Jim Chandler worked as an electronics engineer for the Naval Warfare Assessment center for 30 years. In his last 10 years, he was the TQL (Total Quality Leadership) Director. It started as a business improvement program, but then transitioned as the entire Navy adopted the principle of Dr. W. Edwards Deming.  Under his leadership, all managers and the majority of the workforce attend the Deming 4-Day seminar.

Jim was President of the Deming Management Alliance of Southern California and had the good fortune to attend a dozen Deming seminars. He was friends with Peter Scholtes (The Team Handbook) and attended his class on the "Case against performance appraisal systems and what to do instead".  Peter, Deming and Alfie Kohn's (Punished by Rewards) ideas compelled him to return a bonus check to Vice President Gore. He was featured in the newspaper headline "Federal employee protests and returns bonus."

To implement Dr. Deming's philosophy he implemented and taught all 1000 employees in "Building a high performance organization (HPO) for the 21st century" under John Pickering.  An intensive two-week training to change within the natural occurring work groups. While working with Darrell Gooden of the Adizes institute, Jim became certified in Spiral Dynamics and was called a SWIT (Spiral Wizard in Training), a coveted title, by Don Beck. Jim is now involved as a willing worker and an advocate for the Deming Cooperative led by Dave Nave.
