Deming's Idea in the 21st Century
Presented by Paul Hollingworth

Format: Workshop
Primary Focus: Cultural Transformation
Secondary Focus: Leadership

Description: They say popularity is no barometer of success. Deming’s books were never on the best sellers’ list but as the years have gone by since his death, his work seems to have moved even further from the mainstream. Does this mean that his ideas are no longer relevant? Or have they, to some extent, been ‘absorbed’ into mainstream management thinking?    In this full day workshop, using a model called the 4GM Transformation Road Map,  we will explore what it means to apply Deming thinking across any enterprise and contrast how well this fits with 21st Century management thinking.

Target Audience: This workshop will be of value to anyone interested in successfully applying Deming’s ideas in organisations of any type or size. Whether you consider yourself as a newcomer to Deming or have been working with Deming and related systems thinking concepts.

Organizational Issues:
One of the greatest barriers to adopting the new philosophy is what Deming described as the hope for ‘instant pudding’.  This leads well intentioned managers into flavour of the month fads or attempting initiatives such as ‘lean’ which are incompatible with organisational policies, rules and culture. These must be reviewed and revised to create the environment necessary for transformation.  The belief that copying ‘best practice’ will solve our complex messy problems is another fallacy, which must be addressed.  Deming placed ‘constancy of purpose’ at the head of his list of 14 Points for Management. How can this be maintained against the rising tide of 21st Century ‘solutions’?

Objectives:
Delegates will have the opportunity to share and learn from each others’ practical experience of applying Deming’s ideas in the 21st Century.
